The Bologna complete sample of nearby radio sources II – phase referenced observations of faint nuclear sources

چکیده
Context. To study statistical properties of different classes of sources, it is necessary to observe a sample that is free of selection effects. Aims. To do this, we initiated a project to observe a complete sample of radio galaxies selected from the B2 Catalogue of Radio Sources and the Third Cambridge Revised Catalogue (3CR), with no selection constraint on the nuclear properties. We named this sample “the Bologna Complete Sample” (BCS). Methods. We present new VLBI observations at 5 and 1.6 GHz for 33 sources drawn from a sample not biased toward orientation. By combining these data with those in the literature, information on the parsec-scale morphology is available for a total of 76 of 94 radio sources with a range in radio power and kiloparsec-scale morphologies. Results. The fraction of two-sided sources at milliarcsecond resolution is high (30%), compared to the fraction found in VLBI surveys selected at centimeter wavelengths, as expected from the predictions of unified models. The parsec-scale jets are generally found to be straight and to line up with the kiloparsec-scale jets. A few peculiar sources are discussed in detail.

The 1.4 GHz and Hα Luminosity Functions and Star Formation Rates from Faint Radio Galaxies
A sample of over 1000 objects selected from a 1.4 GHz survey made by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) is used to study the properties of the faint radio source population. The sample, covering an area of ≈ 3 deg, is 50% complete to 0.2 mJy. Over 50% of the radio sources are found to have optical counterparts brighter then R ≈ 21.5. Spectroscopic observations of 249 optically identif...
متن کاملThe Bologna Complete Sample of Nearby Radio Sources
We present a new, complete, sample of 95 radio sources selected from the B2 and 3CR catalogues, with z < 0.1. Since no selection effect on the core radio power, jet velocity, or source orientation is present, this sample is well suited for statistical studies. In this first paper we present the observational status of all sources on the parsec (mas) and kiloparsec (arcsec) scale; we give new pa...

We present a new 408MHz survey (B3.2) carried out with the “Croce del Nord” radiotelescope in Bologna. The survey coordinates limits are −2◦00′ to +2◦15′ in Dec. and 21h to 24h, 00h to 17h in R.A., equivalent to 0.388 sr. The B3.2 is complete to 0.15 Jy but many sources down to 0.1 Jy are included. Our aim was to select a new and complete sample of Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS) radio sources, as t...
متن کاملThe ATESP 5 GHz radio survey . II . Physical properties of the faint radio population ?
Context: One of the most debated issues about sub-mJy radio sources, which are responsible for the steepening of the 1.4 GHz source counts, is the origin of their radio emission. Particularly interesting, from this point of view, is the possibility of combining radio spectral index information with other observational properties to assess whether the sources are triggered by star formation or n...

We present preliminary results from a VLBI survey at λ = 6 cm of a sample of 35 sources with flux densities of 2 – 100 mJy. These sources were selected from the VLA FIRST survey at λ = 20 cm, in a 3 degree field around the bright calibrator 1156+295, simply by imposing S 20 > 10 mJy and θ < 5 arcsec. MERLIN observations at λ6 cm detected 70/127 of these sources with a threshold of 2 mJy at 50 m...
